Attempting to break records is something that most of us aspire to do in some form or the other. We can also easily relate to stories of people who have taken extreme steps in an attempt to break records. 102 Not Out is one such story where the protagonist is attempting to break an unusual record – the world record for the longest living human being. An unusual attempt to break an unusual record is the thing that makes the movie’s concept unique and refreshing. The story is based on a Gujarati play and the writer, Saumya Joshi, is the same author who earlier wrote the Gujarati play.
102 Not Out catches up on the life of Dattatraya (Amitabh Bachchan), who is 102 years old and wants to break the record of the longest living human being. The record is held by a Chinese man, who was aged 118 years. Dattatraya is confident that he can easily live 16 more years to break the record of the longest living human being. However, there’s an unusual problem in that Dattatraya’s 75 year old son Babu (Rishi Kapoor) has a negative outlook towards life. Dattatraya feels that Babu’s morose way of life may jeopardize his mission to break the record of the longest living human being. So, he takes the extreme step of sending Babu to an old age home. From thereon, the story takes on a variety of comical and sentimental hues.
The strength of 102 Not Out is in its simplicity. There are no sudden twists or electrifying scenes to make your jaw drop. The movie also does not pretend to be explicitly clever. It just gives you an unusual story that showcases the finer nuances of strong relationships. Both Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor have performed brilliantly in the movie, which shows that their acting skills are continuously getting better with age. Credit also goes to Director Umesh Shukla who never lets a dull moment prevail even when a significant percentage of the movie is filmed indoors.
102 Not Out stands out for its unique and entertaining concept. If you like to explore something new, this one’s definitely for you.
