In a grisly act, gunmen fired at Coptic Christians travelling in two buses, killing at least 26 people. The terror attack occurred in southern Egypt on Friday, early morning. This is the latest in a series of attacks on minorities in Egypt, a country that is finding it tough to deal with extremism within its borders. According to Bishop Makarios of the Coptic Orthodox Church in Minya Province, the gunmen came in three sport utility vehicles and they started firing at a pickup truck that was carrying workmen and two buses that were full of worshippers, who were on their way to the Monastery of St. Samuel the Confessor. Among the dead were children, elderly people and laborers. Around 23 people have been injured in the firing.
Till last reports, no group has yet claimed responsibility for the terror attack. It is being said that the gunmen had travelled from a nearby mountain and they were waiting to ambush the convoy. The police have launched a massive operation to find the culprits and arrest them. It may be recalled that Coptic Churches and its followers are being increasingly targeted by the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood.
