Three people working with the General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF) lost their lives as terrorists attacked a GREF camp in Jammu’s Jourian area in the Akhnoor district which is located near the Line of Control (LOC).
The GREF is a force that is not involved in combat and is a part of the Border Roads Organization (BRO). The GREF that was attached was located less than 3 kilometres from the LOC. The exact number of terrorists involved in the attack are not known and authorities have cordoned the area and are combing the area to catch them.
No terror outfit has so far taken credit for the attack. Militants had attacked at around 3:30 am in the morning and took advantage of the forests and the dark surroundings to lob grenades in the camp. They then fired at unarmed people in what is being described as an act of extreme cowardice.
The attach has come a few days after Union Home Minister Shri Rajnath Singh had informed the media about the steps being taken to safeguard border areas from militant infiltration.
This is one of the first attacks of the new year. Over 85 soldiers of the Indian Army were martyered in 2016 as a result of cross border terrorism.
