External Affairs Minister of India, Sushma Swaraj has claimed that about 301 Indian fishermen are lodged in Pakistan Jails and Pakistan has confirmed the presence of only 77 of them. She also said that government is doing everything in can to secure the release of fishermen from Pakistani jails.
Sushma was replying to a question raised by Congress member Madhusudan Mistry asking the number of jailed Indian fishermen in Pakistan.
She also said that India has strongly taken up the issue with Pakistan. A policy of the exchange of prisoners information has also been institutionalized for such cases. Most recent exchange of prisoners took place on on January 1 this year.
Sushma also claimed that since 2014, about 1,216 fishermen were freed from Pakistani jails and in last three months 438 Indian fishermen were also secured a release from Pakistani jails.
She also said that the government is regularly tracking the situation and responding in a strong and committed manner for the freedom of Indian fishermen from Pakistani jails.
