As India is emerging into a preferred destination to set up manufacturing units and industries, more and more investors are eying up some of its states, notably Odisha and its capital city of Bhubaneswar, to establish their industries.
Odisha has always been widely known for its abundance of natural resources. And with the development of industrial areas in Odisha, it is probably the only state to grab the most attention of investors, both domestic and foreign. When it comes to its capital city — Bhubaneswar — the growth opportunities for industries are massive. At present, the city has a range of industries, from “old-economy” sectors like Aluminium to modern sectors such as IT.
Here is a list of major industrial sectors operating in the industrial area of Bhubaneswar, Odisha:
- Information Technology:If there is one city in Odisha that is deserving as an information technology hub, it has to be Bhubaneswar. It boasts a flourishing Information Technology (IT) sector. The natural talent for maths and visuals that empowered the predecessors of today’s Odisha to build stunning architectural temples has now evolved into a talent for devising codes in computer programs. As a result, the city is now a centre of attraction for investors to establish IT centres in the industrial area of Bhubaneswar and its epicentre — the National Informatics Centre. Besides, some big Indian IT companies, including Satyam Computers and Infosys Technologies, have already started their operations.
- Iron and Steel: You may not know it, but the first-ever steel plant of India after independence — Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) — was set up in Odisha, or as previously called, Orissa. The regional headquarters of RSP is located in the capital city of Bhubaneswar. The plant produces an estimated 1.9 million tonne of crude steel every year. Apart from producing standard steel products, it also manufactures value-added products such as auto chassis steel. Also, Tata Steel Special Economic Zone Limited is being developed in one of the SEZs in Odisha, which is thought to boost steel production in the region.
- Paper: Apart from the IT and steel industry, Bhubaneswar is also home to many paper industries. The demand for paper is unlikely to plummet despite the advent of digitization. Currently, three major paper mills have their headquarters in the industrial area of Bhubaneswar, which makes the paper industry one of the major industries in Bhubaneswar.
- Cement: The cement industry ranks among the major industries in Bhubaneswar as a significant part of the total export of cement comes from the city. Presently, two large cement factories operate in the state of Odisha. One factory is located at Rajgangpur, whereas the other factory is at Bardol near Bargarh, administered by IDCOL.
While Odisha is already among the most preferred destinations to set up manufacturing plants, Bhubaneshwar adds more reasons for investors to choose the state for their next industrial projects. Plus, the development of industrial areas in Odisha is likely to benefit them because of relaxation in custom duties and liberal trade policies.
