Four persons were allegedly beaten up in a remote tribal village in Betul district. The event was videographed and has been circulating in the social media which has gone viral. They were thrashed by a vigilante group on the suspicion of being cow smugglers. After the video had gone viral, police registered separate cases – against the assailants and the alleged cow smugglers. Though the alleged cow smugglers are arrested, assailants are at large.
The video showed the four youths tied up and being beaten brutally in front of a crowd at the village, about 110 km from Betul district headquarters. Sub Divisional Officer of Police Prem Singh Thakur said, “A case was registered against Shyam, Manak, Sundar Parate and others (part of the cow vigilante group) for assault.” He continued further “These cow smugglers have been arrested. We are investigating the video clip, and will take further action accordingly.”
All of them were absconding and police has launched a hunt. The alleged smugglers are residents of Rehatgao in neighbouring Harda district, the police officer said.
While the gau rakshaks have been criticised with PM Modi giving a stern warning promising action against those who tke law in their hands, this news comes as a shocker to the district administration.
