Indian Railways is set for a major makeover. It is planning to spend a mammoth Rs.8,000 Crore to induct 40,000 refurbished coaches by 2023. The coaches is expected to have new interiors and bio-toilets. Indian Railways, which is the largest public sector enterprise in India and one of the largest employer in the World would also be adding more safety features to its coaches including couplers to prevent the coach to overturn during the accidents.
Improved technology in the coaches is pegged at Rs.30 lakh per coach. The target is to get 1000 coaches refurbished this year which would increase to 3,000 in the next year and 5,500 coaches from year 3 onwards.
The Centre Buffer Couplers will be installed in all the coaches for security. Currently the coaches manufactured in Integral Coach Factory(ICF) does not have this facility. Only the coaches manufactured in Kapurthala and Raebareli are fitted with the CBC.
The integration of CBC in each coach would cost Rs.28 Lakhs.
Apart from refurbishing, Railways is also expected to manufacture new coaches with modern features during 2018-19 and 2022-23.
