~ First of its kind SRS case in Satara region ~
29th March 2019: A successful cranial radiosurgery perform on 70-year-old lady by Dr.Siddhesh Tryambake along with his team at Onco Life Cancer Centre. Also it is First of its kind SRS case in satara region.
Mrs. Chavan (Name changed) had been detected with papillary thyroid carcinoma since last few years. While being on the treatment she was recently diagnosed with a small brain tumour of 1.8 cm. Tumour which had spread to the brain from the thyroid region making it a metastatic papillary thyroid carcinoma. After detailed review, Dr Siddhesh Tryambake & team decided to treat her with a radical intent & planned for a radio surgical treatment. Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) is one of its kind where a high dose of radiation is focused on a very small area of the body. It was an obvious choice; however, patient’s condition needed a careful evaluation, as even a minor breach in feasibility and accuracy might have triggered patient towards major complications like paralysis or coma.
Team comprised mainly of Dr Siddhesh Tryambake & his senior physicist Mr Vikram Raja who planned intensively over 3-4 days & could precisely execute the same. Papillary thyroid cancer (also sometimes called papillary thyroid carcinoma) is the most common type of thyroid cancer with a general notion of better survival.
Dr Siddhesh Tryambake, Consultant Radiation Oncologist at Onco – Life Cancer Centre says, “Papillary thyroid carcinoma, having a relatively good prognosis, patient being in a good general condition and tumour being very small at presentation, we found this patient ideal for this procedure. This case was very critical, as here a very high dose of radiation was supposed to be focused on a very small area of brain i.e tumour, so as to give the effect of a surgical management. Using the data derived from MRI, the total dose required to control this tumor was decided and we went on to give full dose to achieve maximum level of response. After intense planning, the same was delivered by our team headed by me which comprised of radiotherapists and radiation physicists. The most important aspect is that the entire dosage could be carried to the tumor in about half an hour, with several intervening Cone Beam CT scans (CBCT) in order to ensure precise delivery of the dose and thence the treatment was done in a day.”
“This surgery was performed without opening the skull with no blood loss & thus related complications like damage to critical areas of brain which control power, sensation, speech etc could be avoided. “Currently patient is doing good with no side effects.”
“Radiation oncology has undergone immense progress since last few decades. We are delighted that we did our first classical Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS). Our focus has always been towards fighting the disease the right way, aiming not only at cancer cure but also at improving patient’s quality of life. We are zealous and determined to offer this advanced radiation oncology treatment at our hospital, which helps our patients to lead a better life.”
