Niti Aayog, the think tank of Indian government wants the Indian Railways to prepare a plan similar to Pradhan Mantri Gramin Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) and National Highways Development Programme (NHDP) to link districts which are not on rail map.
A senior official said that India needs schemes such as NHDP and PMGSY in Railways. There are may parts of India which are still not connected with a railway line.
Niti Aayog will work with Railways to prepare projects such as PMGSY and NHDP on national priority basis. Railways must prepare strategies and execute them to increase the passenger traffic as well as compete with airlines at competitive rates.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has termed Indian Railways, roads and rivers as the lifeline of the country in the Budget 2017 and allocated record Rs. 3,96,135 crore in 2017-18 for infrastructure projects.
