The government has announced a new rule that has made Aadhaar mandatory for getting free LPG gas connection. This would be applicable to women of households living below the poverty line, who want to get the free gas connection under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana. Such women have time till May 31 to enroll for Aadhaar. The announcement was made by the petroleum ministry. This comes after the earlier announcement wherein Aadhaar was made mandatory for getting subsidized cooking gas under the Pahal scheme. “A beneficiary desirous of availing the benefits under the scheme, who does not possess the Aadhaar number or has not yet enrolled for Aadhaar shall have to apply for Aadhaar enrolment by May 31,” the ministry said.
With this recent announcement, Aadhaar has now become mandatory for more than 35 different welfare schemes. The government is planning to link several more welfare schemes to Aadhaar. The Aadhaar linking has been instrumental in controlling corruption at the lower level and helping the government save several thousand crores. It’s being considered as a major system overhaul for the country and is expected to improve the standard of living of its masses.
