Aiming to check bulk booking, fraudulent booking and instances of impersonation, the Indian Railways is planning to introduce Aadhaar-based booking of online train tickets. It may be recalled that Aadhaar has already been made compulsory for availing concessions available to senior citizens, which would be applicable from April 1. Now, the Railways is planning to introduce Aadhaar for all train tickets booked online.
The plan to introduce Aadhaar-based online train ticket bookings has been published in the new business plan 2017-18, which was unveiled today by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu. Apart from Aadhaar based ticketing, the Railways is also planning to make big leaps in going cashless. There are plans to install 1,000 automatic ticket vending machines and 6,000 point-of-sales machines across the country.
Speaking on the development, a senior official from the Railway Ministry said, “Aadhaar number will be required for one-time registration at the IRCTC ticketing site. The step is aimed at eliminating touts from registering with fake identities.”
The new Railway business plan also talks about plans to launch new tourist trains that will connect hill stations. There are also plans to improve amenities and catering services so that people can travel comfortably and enjoy their journey.
