Newspatrolling: In a significant development, retired High Court Justice CS Karnan has been arrested in Coimbatore. It may be recalled that Karnan had slipped out of police net and was evading police arrest since May 9. He was caught today by Coimbatore police and now he will face judicial action for contempt of court. CS Karnan had hit headlines earlier for his first of a kind revolt against the judiciary, wherein he had stated that he was being victimized for being a Dalit. Karnan had also turned all rules and systems on its head, when he had issued an order to arrest all the judges of a Supreme Court bench on charges of torturing a Dalit person.
Karnan had retired on June 12, but even before that he had gone into hiding to evade arrest. Earlier, he was sentenced to spend 6 months in prison for contempt of court. The order was given by a seven-judge bench of the Supreme Court. With this order, Karnan will now hold the dubious distinction of being the first sitting high court judge to be handed a jail term by the Supreme Court.
