In an announcement today, Bharti Airtel said that there will not be any charges on incoming calls/SMS and no additional charges on outgoing calls. This will be applicable from April 1, 2017. Additional charges on data while roaming has also been dropped by Airtel. Customer using home data packs can use it throughout India while roaming. These new offers by Airtel are in response to Reliance Jio’s groundbreaking voice and data plans that have intensified the competition in the telecom sector. It may be recalled that Reliance Jio customers will have to start paying for their chosen plans after April 1, but voice calls on its network would remain free and there won’t be any charges for national roaming.
Airtel has also launched a new scheme for international roaming. The scheme has been designed to protect customers from bill shocks. It features an automatic adjustment that is equal to the daily pack for that particular country. “The moment a customer’s billing reaches the price of a one day pack for the country, he/she will be automatically moved to that pack.”, said Airtel.
Free incoming calls on national roaming were also introduced by Vodafone last year. With Airtel following the same path, the entire network of the country will function as a local network. Now, customers will not have to worry when they are outside their home base, as they can make and receive calls and use data in the same cost as their home base.
