In what turns out to be a generational shift for the Samajwadi Party (SP), the suspensions of UP Chief Minister and SP National Secretary Ram Gopal Yadav have been revoked with immediate effect. This seems to be a loss of face for the ageing SP supremo MSY and a stunning rebuke for the state party President Shivpal Singh Yadav.
Netaji, as MSY is fondly called, had been asked by senior SP leaders like Azam Khan had asked him to reinstate Akhilesh Yadav in the party. Despite of all the public mudslinging that has happened, most people had sided with Akhilesh Yadav and had blamed Amar Singh for the f amily feud. Many senior SP leaders including Azam Khan had asked for his ouster from the party. Mr. Khan who is a minister in the UP government has said that he is happy to see Mr. Yadav back in the party.
In a sensational twist, Rajya Sabha MP, Ram Gopal Yadav said that the party will still go ahead with the national convention that has been called for in Lucknow. MSY and Akhilesh Yadav had called for meetings at their respective residences in UP today, but most of the party functionaries, MPs, MLAs and MLCs turned up at Akhilesh’s residence, thus cementing his authority in the party. This symbolic show of strength seems to have rattled the faction supporting Amar Singh, Shivpal Yadav and MSY. They quickly grouped together to revoke the suspensions of the suspended party members.
The sudden turn of events in a matter of 24 hours has made a few things clear. One – Akhilesh Yadav is now the unquestioned leader of the SP. Two – Shivpal Singh Yadav may be Akhilesh’ uncle, but in politics, he is his junior. Three – Amar Singh’s future in the party is under a cloud.
There may still be some more twists and turns till the tickets are distributed and campaigning has begun. Keep reading this space to know more.
