BJP national president Amit Shah today gave his statement before a Special Investigation Team (SIT) court in connection with the Naroda Gam riot case. Amit Shah attended the court hearing as a defense witness and his statement was in favor of former Gujarat minister Maya Kodnani. In the case against Kodnani, it has been alleged that she had led and instigated a mob in Naroda Patiya and Naroda Gam to take revenge for the people who were killed in the Godhra train carnage. She is among 82 other people who have been charged with killing 11 Muslims in Naroda Gam, which is located in Ahmedabad. Kodnani has also been charged with criminal conspiracy and attempt to murder. It may be recalled that 59 kar sevaks were killed by muslims when the Sabarmati Express had halted at the Godhra railway station. The incident had sparked widespread riots in Gujarat in which many people were killed.
In the statement provided to the court, Amit Shah said that he had met Kodnani in the state assembly in Gandhinagar around 8.30 am and later also at the Sola Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad at 11 am to 11.30 am on February 28, 2002. This was the day when the riot and murders took place at Naroda Gam. At the time of incident, both Kodnani and Amit Shah were legislators in the state government in Gujarat. Shah said that he does not know where Kodnani went after she met him at the hospital. He said that the police had taken both of them to a safe place since agitated crowds had surrounded the hospital.
