In a surprising move, the BJP today announced that it will be fielding BJP president Amit Shah and Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani for Rajya Sabha elections from Gujarat. The decision was taken during the party’s parliamentary meeting held today. The announcement was made by Union Minister JP Nadda. Three Rajya Sabha seats from Gujarat will become vacant soon and BJP is keen to grab all three. The elections will be held on August 8. For Irani, it’s a period of change, as she was appointed the Information and Broadcasting Minister just a few days back. It had happened when the post fell vacant after Venkaiah Naidu was announced as the Vice presidential candidate. Smriti Irani is already a Rajya Sabha member from Gujarat and she will be contesting for a second term.
Meanwhile, senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel today filed his nomination for Rajya Sabha elections from Gujarat. It may be recalled that Patel is already part of the Rajya Sabha, and if he wins this time also, he will become a Rajya Sabha member for the fifth time. However, BJP is keep to defeat him this time and is working on strategies to pull him down. The BJP has not yet revealed the name of the candidate to be fielded against Ahmed Patel. The BJP really wants to defeat Ahmed Patel, who is a political advisor to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, to cause embarrassment to the rival party, just ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in Gujarat.
