‘Amma jindabad’ ‘long live Amma’ ‘Amma why did you leave us’ shouted mourners while the Tamil Nadu Chief Minsiter J Jayalaithaa was being laid to rest at MGR Memorial at Marina Beach in Chennai on Tuesday evening with full state honors.
Amma’s body drapped in Tricolor in a flower-decked cortege was taken from Rajaji Hall in Triplicaneto the memorial at 4:40pm. After doctors of Apollo had declared her dead on Monday her body was taken to her residence in Poes Garden from where it was taken to Rajaji Hall.
In Rajaji Hall her body was kept in inclined position for display.
The body was taken from Rajaji Hall in Triplicane at around 4.30pm in a flower-decked cortege. More than10,000 police and army personnel guarded the Last procession moved towards Marina.
It was a tough task for the security forces to control sea of mourners who had come down from different part of the states to Tamil Nadu capital to get last glimpse of their beloved leader.
The funeral ceremony was performed according Vaishnavite custom. The Madras Regiment paid gun salute to the chief minister as her coffin was lowered.
Lakhs of people participated in the last journey of the charismatic leader. Men and women of all age, caste and status were seen mourning on the streets.
Doctor’s had declared Jayalalithaa dead on Monday night due to cardiac arrest while undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospital.
