Just a day before, 3 Congress MLAs in Gujarat had quit the party and joined BJP. Now, congress got another jolt today when three more of its MLAs quit the party. With this, the total number of Congress MLAs that have resigned has now reached 6. This is a major loss for Congress, especially when looking at the Rajya Sabha elections that are going to be held in the state. The congress wants to get a Rajya Sabha seat for their leading political leader Ahmed Patel, but with MLAs regularly leaving the party, it would be difficult for Congress to get Patel elected. It may be recalled that Patel is the political advisor to Congress President Sonia Gandhi and if he loses, it would cause a huge embarrassment to the party.
With the 6 legislators quitting the Congress party, the party’s tally in the state has come down to just 51 of the 182 member assembly. And more defections are likely, as two more MLAs have threatened to quit the party. The three MLAs who resigned today are Mansinh Chauhan, Chhanabhai Chaudhary and Ramsinh Parmar. The MLAs who quit said that they were fed up with groupism and internal politics. One of the MLAs said that he had joined Congress because of Shankersinh Vaghela, and there were talks about Congress forming the government in the state, but it never happened. He said that groupism and internal politics has become more important in the Congress party rather than winning elections. The MLAs are likely to join BJP.
