AP Govt amends act for appointing PV Sindhu as Group-1 Officer

The Andhra Pradesh amended the State Pubic Services Act on Tuesday by passing a Bill in the Legislature to appoint Olympics silver medal winning shuttler P V Sindhu as a Group-1 officer in the government.

Finance Minister Yanamala Ramakrishnudu introduced a Bill to amend the Act which was passed unanimously in the Assembly and also later in the Legislative Council as well.

Certain provisions in the Andhra Pradesh (Regulation of Appointments to Public Services and Rationalisation of Staff Pattern and Pay Structure) Act, 1994, prevented the appointment of the badminton player since any recruitment in public service should only be made through the AP Public Service Commission and if not by selection committee or employment exchange which wasn’t the case with PV Sindhu and hence Section 4 of the Andhra Pradesh Act,1944 was amended to enable Sindhu to be appointed directly for the post of a revenue divisional officer.

It is to be noted that when Sindhu claimed the Silver Medal in Badminton in Olympics, the AP government warded her Rs.3 crore in cash ad also a residential plot in Amaravati and the cabinet had also passed a resolution last year in August offering her a Group-1 post of her choice.
“We will give government jobs to other meritorious sportspersons as well,” said the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Chandrababu Naidu. He is also looking forward to appoint Sindhu as the ambassador of sports for Andhra Pradesh.
