Qadeer Ahmed had escaped the law for more than two decades, but he was finally arrested from Bijnor in connection with his involvement in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts. The operation to arrest Ahmed was carried out through a joint initiative by Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) and the Gujarat police. Ahmed is accused of supplying arms and ammunition used in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts. Ahmed was identified to be living in Kalhedi village, post which, the police got an arrest warrant issued against him through a court in Gujarat. A team of UP ATS, led by inspector Vishwajit Kumar, arrested Ahmed from the village.
It may be recalled that as many as 257 people were killed in 1993 Mumbai blasts and more than 700 people were injured. According to police, the arms and ammunition were provided by Tiger Memon and Ahmed came into the picture when these arms and ammunition were stored in Jamnagar (Gujarat). Ahmed is said to have played an important role in the storage of the arms and ammunition used in the blasts. The police will now take Ahmed to Gujarat for further investigation.
