The News Broadcasters Association (NBA) has filed a complaint with Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) against Arnab Goswami’s Republic TV for allegedly running multiple feeds on various multi-system operator (MSO) platforms to push its viewership. This comes at a time when the first data of Republic TV’s viewership is yet to be released. In its complaint, NBA has mentioned that Republic TV lists itself at multiple locations across various genres in the electronic programme guide (EPG) of various MSOs and other distributors on multiple logical channel numbers (LCNs). The complaint states that this is violation of TRAI rules.
An excerpt from the TRAI rulebook reads, “It shall be mandatory for the distributor to place channels in the EPG, in such a way that the television channels of the same genre are placed together consecutively and one channel appears at only one place.” It may be recalled that Republic TV was launched on May 6. It was launched as a free-to-air channel and made available through most DTH services and cable television operators. Republic TV has not yet responded to the allegations leveled by NBA.
