Assam has been declared as a “disturbed area” for the next three months by the Centre under AFSPA – Armed Forces Special Powers Act. The reason is because of the happening of various violent activities being conducted by United Liberation Front of Assam, National Democratic Front of Bodoland and others.
The notification in the official gazette included entire Assam and the areas bordering Meghalaya which is described as “disturbed area” since May 3. It is to be noted that AFSPA is in Assam since Nov 1990 which is also taking care of three districts in Arunachal Pradesh since Jan 2016.
ULFA, NDFB and others were spreading the violence in the State, it noted mentioning there were 75 incidents of violence in Assam in 2016 killing 33 people which included 4 security personnel. Some 14 people were abducted as well. In 2017, there were nine violent incidents in which 4 people including 2 security personnel making the centre to announce it in order to bring it under its control.
