In a development that once again proves that no one is above law, properties and bank accounts of ousted Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his family members were seized today by the top anti-graft body in Pakistan. It may be recalled that Sharif and his family members are facing charges of corruption and money laundering. Sharif had to step down from the prime minister’s post after he was disqualified by a Supreme Court bench on July 28. Sharif was found to be dishonest in relation to the Panama Papers scandal and the court had ordered corruption cases to be filed against him and his family members. The cases are currently being heard by the Accountability Court. The Court today ordered Sharif, his daughter Maryam and son-in-law Capt. (retd) Safdar to be present before the court on September 26.
The assets and bank accounts of Sharif were seized by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). Summons and property attachment notices were pasted on the residence of Sharif in Raiwind. It may be recalled that Sharif is currently in London to visit his ailing wife Kulsoom. His family members are also in London. There is speculation that Sharif may never return to face charges in the corruption case. However, Sharif’s party, the ruling PML-N, has assured that Sharif will return as soon as his wife gets better. However, “as soon as” is quite a vague term and it can be stretched forever based on one’s specific needs and requirements.
