Baazaar is primarily about the stock markets and how it defines the lives of millions of people, including everyone from retail investors to stock brokers, businessmen, industrialists, politicians and other powerful people. The movie is based on the Indian stock market, but it seems to rely on the 1987 Hollywood movie Wall Street. There are many scenes in the movie that appear to be identical to that of Wall Street. However, the moviemakers have ensured that there are plenty of twists and turns and surprises to make the movie as original as possible. Baazaar also reveals the real story behind the stock markets and explains how most things are driven by greed and the sole purpose of making money.
The movie follows on the life of Rizwan Ahmed (Rohan Mehra), who hails from the city of Allahabad. He has high aspirations and one of his dreams is to work with Shakun Kothari (Saif Ali Khan), a shrewd Gujarati businessman. Rizwan considers Shakun as his idol and is willing to do anything to please him. However, when he comes to Mumbai and starts working for Shakun, he realizes that the things he thought about this world is a lot different from reality. As Rizwan realizes that most things are influenced by money and power to acquire even more money and power, it shakes his belief system and brings him with direct confrontation with powerful people.
Baazaar has some extremely good performances, led by Saif Ali Khan, who fits perfectly in the role of a shrewd Gujarati businessman. Saif appears to have worked hard in his role, as he has acquired some typical mannerisms and accent associated with the people of Gujarat. The character feels quite real and it has various shades of grey, which again is something that Saif excels at. Other actors including Rohan Mehra, Radhika Apte and Chitrangda Singh have also delivered good performances. Credit also goes to Director Gauravv K Chawla for creating a riveting atmosphere throughout the movie. Background score by John Stewart Eduri also works perfectly with the movie’s crime-thriller theme.
Baazaar is designed to thrill and keep you guessing. If you like crime thrillers, you would definitely want to watch this one.
