Bajrang Punia claimed the victory in the finals of the men’s 65kg Asian Wrestling Championships by winning at a margin of 6-2 against Seongchul Lee of Korea.
Bajrang was initially trailing by 0-2 but showed some greater skills to score points one after the another to end it up with a score of 6-2. Bajrang was cheered by his mentor and Olympic medallist Yogeshwar Dutt.
Though he trailed in the first session of 3 minutes, on the second session as he quickly picked up three points to be ahead after a minute and a half. He got two more points as the referee warned the Korean. He ended up securing one last point with less than 30 seconds to go when the Korean protested.
India had won four silver and four bronze medals in the competition.
Earlier, the gold meal hope Sandeep Tomar, twisted his ankle in the first bout of the morning session in the 57 kg category, and got pinned by Ulukbek Zholdoshbekov of Kyrgyzstan. On the women front, Sarita who had to represent India due to the last minute withdrawal of Sakshi Malik did reach the finals but went down to Aisuluu Tynybekova of Kyrgyzstan by 6-0.
