Women in the country already feel unsafe and things get worse when they are shamed for their actions in case they are molested or raped. Such a case has occurred in Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi. The victim was molested by some men riding on a bike, but instead of expressing sympathy with the girl and taking action against the culprits, it is alleged that the officials actually shamed the girl for stepping out of the hostel after 6 PM. Reacting to the victim-shaming, the students in BHU have launched a protest against the officials. The protest coincided with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Varanasi. Even though Modi is back in Delhi, the protest is continuing.
The victim resides in one of the hostels of the university. She had alleged that she was molested by three men who were riding on a bike. The students said that neither the guards, nor the warden or any other official came to help the girl. Even worse, the girl was questioned why she was out of the hostel after 6 PM. The students said that the victim has been traumatized and the campus is no longer safe for students. The students are protesting in the front of BHU main gate with banners and posters. One student said that eve-teasing has become a common phenomenon inside the campus. However, some officials said that the protest was politically motivated.
