Bangladesh evacuating 1 million people in the wake of Cyclone MORA

Cyclone MORA is expected to it Bangladesh today. On account of this, which is expected to bring great devastation, Govt of Bangladesh is evacuating close to 1 million people to avoid casualties. Earlier, Minister Kiren Rijju has issued notification to the North Eastern States to stay safe indoors. He tweeted from his official handle.

Ports in south-east of Bangladesh has displayed great danger level 10 whereas in the west, it is at level 8. The cyclone has already caused great floods in Srilanka killing 180 people already with more than 100 still missing. The nation has not seen such a natural disaster in the past 14 years ever since Tsunami hit the island nation.

Some 500 shelters in Chittagong areas is providing shelter to the people and low lying areas like Cox Bazaar is expected to be inundated with floods which can go anywhere between 4-5 feet.

“We are targeting zero casualties and we will try our best to evacuate more than a million before the landfall,” disaster management authority spokesman Abul Hashim told.

Fishing boat and trawlers have been advised to remain in port, and coastal ferries have suspended operations.

Bangladesh was hit by flash floods last month in its north-eastern part and is yet to recover fully from that disaster and this news comes as a double blow for one of the poorest economies in the World. India has already sent some remedies including food and medicines.
