While many countries across the globe have legalized homosexuality, it is still seen as a penal offence in Bangladesh, which is a Muslim-majority country. In a crackdown on homosexuality, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Bangladesh today arrested 28 youngsters on charges of homosexuality. These people were arrested from a community center located on the outskirts of Dhaka. According to information provided by Jahangir Hossain Matubbar, Commander of Rapid Action Battalion, the youngsters were arrested from a community center named Chaya Neer. This center is located at Antibazar area in Keraniganj Upazila. Most of those arrested are students in the age group of 20 to 25 years.
Speaking about the arrests, Matubbar said that local people had complained about these youths, which is why a raid was conducted to arrest them. He said that these youngsters used to come at the community center and spend the entire night there. He also said that condoms and lubricants and other items have been recovered during the raid. Matubbar said that the youths have already confessed to their involvement in homosexual performances. The authorities will now file a case against the youngsters under the Narcotics Control Act in Keraniganj Police Station. However, the arrests have been condemned by the international media.
