The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply & Transport worker’s union has decided to go ahead with the bus strike today which is expected to affect the already crowded Mumbai roads since hundreds and thousands of commuters use either the bus or train as their mode of transport. The strike has been called for citing various demands including the timely payment of salaries.
The bus strike is expected to cause a major disaster since ‘Raksha Bandhan’ is being celebrated today. The BEST employees and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation have been at the loggerheads for the past few days over several issues, including irregular payment of salary, the issue which has been plaguing the Corporation and its workers.
The BEST employees’ union led by Shashank Rao,said yesterday, “We wanted a written assurance from the BMC administration but they did not give it. Now, we have decided not to report to duty from midnight. No bus will ply tomorrow.” This is said to be happening in full force since the Union has 16,500 workers who forms the major chunk of the employees.
The Maharashtra government has warned of invoking Maharashtra Essential Services Maintenance Act, 2011 against the employees who go on strike which would affect the life of the Public since public transport is an essential service and is covered under the act.
