Billionaire Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, who heads the Sinaloa drug cartel, one of the biggest in the World, has been extradited to the United States of America. El Chapo has featured in the Forbes magazine’s rich list many times and is considered to be the most powerful drug lord in the World.
Appeals filed by his lawyers to halt the extradition were dismissed by the Mexican Supreme Court, thus clearing way for his departure to the United States of America. His lawyers plan to appeal to a local human rights court.
The Government of Mexico has received many requests from the courts of the United States to have El Chapo extradited to the States for his crimes. President Enrique Pena Nieto of Mexico approved two of those requests, i.e. one from a court in California, and one from a court in Texas. Mr. Guzman has been handed over to the authorities in the United States and will be held in New York City. He is expected to attend a court hearing in Brooklyn, New York. He has been accused of unleashing a terror of violence by using hitmen to murder, torture and hurt his opponenents. An indictment also accused him of running an elaborate operation to sell drugs and launder billions of dollars of profits he earned through this.
