Continuing with its mission to win power in all states in the country, the BJP today made its entry in Tripura by inducting 6 MLAs into the party fold. It may be recalled that these MLAs were earlier with Mamta Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC), but they were tagged as rebels and fired from the party. These MLAs had voted for President Ram Nath Kovind in the Presidential elections and now they have been officially inducted into BJP. For the last 24 years, Tripura has been ruled by the left parties and TMC was the only other party in the state. However, with the six MLAs joining BJP, TMC’s MLAs count in Tripura has come down to zero.
TMC had advocated all its MPs and MLAs to vote for opposition Presidential candidate Meira Kumar, but the Tripura MLAs openly defied the party’s directive. The TMC Tripura MLAs openly declared that they would not support a left candidate for the post of President. The plan for the six TMC MLAs joining BJP was prepared and executed by Himanta Biswa Sarma, who has been credited with helping the party make inroads in the North East. Earlier also, Sarma has helped BJP win in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur. The joining of the six TMC MLAs is the latest of his achievements. It is expected to improve the party’s prospects in the assembly elections that are to be held next year.
