Chinese President Xi Jinping today launched the BRICS Summit. During his speech, Xi said that the world should reject protectionism. The statement comes in the wake of the pressure being put by America and European countries on Beijing to reduce market barriers. Xi said that developments like protectionism and a narrow world view are not good for the world’s future. Xi said that sustainable development could only be achieved through openness and inclusiveness. This is the ninth BRICS summit. The BRICS group was created as an alternative world order that could challenge the might of Western nations. Xi said that BRICS has allowed emerging economies and developing countries to have more say in world affairs. “The law of the jungle where the strong prey on the weak and the zero-sum game are rejected,” Xi said.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived for the BRICS Summit in China’s Xiamen. PM Modi would be looking at having measnginful discussions with member countries and to arrive as positive outocmes. PM Modi is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with other leaders such as Russian President Vladimir Putin. Modi is also expected to meet Xi on the sidelines of the BRICS summit. The talks are likely to be about state sponsored terrorism such as that being exported by countries like Pakistan. People of Indian origin in China are excited to see Modi in China.
