Founded in 2011, Byju’s is a leading educational technology (edtech) company headquartered in Bengaluru. The company’s primary product – BYJU’S – The Learning App, provides educational content for students up to Class 12th. As compared to traditional textbook learning, Byju’s focuses on video content, animation, game-based learning, quizzes and personalized learning solutions to make learning easier and more interesting. Byju’s also provides study materials and support for competitive exams such as CAT, IAS, GMAT, GRE, JEE, NEET, Bank entrance exams, etc. Byju’s has more than 3.5 crore registered users and 24 lakh paid subscribers, which makes it one of the largest edtech platforms in the world.
It all started in 2007, when founder Byju Raveendran used to work for Pan Ocean Shipping, a shipping company based out of UK. As Byju was good with mathematics, he used to help his friends to crack competitive exams such as CAT (Common Admission Test). Byju also took the exam, just to gain experience of what it actually feels like. Byju scored 100 percentile in CAT and got calls from IIMs, but he decided to go back to his job. Later, he started conducting workshops during weekends, which became a huge hit among competitive exam aspirants. As more and more students started enquiring about his classes and workshops, he decided to launch an online platform. The idea was to lend his expertise to as many students as possible. It eventually led to the launch of Byju’s in 2011. The company achievedunicorn status in 2018 and became the world’s largest edtech company with a valuation of $5.4 billion (Rs 37,000 crore) in 2019.
Byju’s has received funding from various investors such as Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI), Sequoia Capital India, Sofina, Verlinvest, Light Speed Venture Partners, Times Internet, Aarin Capital, IFC, Tencent, Nasper Ventures, Canadian Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB), and General Atlantic.
In 2017, Byju’s acquired TutorVista (including Edurite) and in 2019, US-based Osmo became a part of the company. These acquisitions are aimed at helping Byju’s strengthen its presence in international markets.
Byju’s competes with other edtech companies such as Vedantu, Toppr, Meritnation, Simplilearn, and Doubtnut.
