The Law Commission, which advises the government on complex legal issues, is looking for answers to the question whether betting and gambling can be legalized in the country. The Law commission is looking into various possibilities such as curbing illegal activity by legalizing betting and gambling. The commission is also examining the possibility whether legalizing betting and gambling would help create jobs and boost the government’s sources of revenue. It is also delving into ethical aspects such as whether legalizing betting and gambling would be morally acceptable in the Indian context, where such activities are looked down upon. Then there’s also the question of whether or not to allow foreign betting and gambling companies to set up their operations in the country.
It may be recalled that even the Supreme Court had asked the Law Commission to look into such possibilities in 2016 while hearing the BCCI vs. Cricket Association of Bihar case. Seeking public view on the topic, Law Commission Chairman BS Chauhan said, “While considering the issue, the Commission discerned that gambling is also a subject which is very closely associated with betting. While considering legalization of betting, leaving aside gambling may render the whole exercise futile.”
