Often, there is leftover milk in our homes and we are faced with the dilemma of what to do with it. This is especially true when the milk is approaching its use-by date. Using leftover milk to prepare other food items may be an option, but that does not work in every situation. Pouring the leftover milk into the drain creates its own challenges, as it presents you with a sense of guilt. So, what would be the right solution that would work in all situations? Well, some people say that they have discovered the perfect solution, which is to freeze milk to increase its shelf life. They say that it works fine, just like freezing other food items such as meat, cheese, etc.

The idea of freezing milk to increase its shelf life may work, but there are certain outcomes that may not be acceptable to everyone. Here are some important things you need to know about freezing milk to increase its shelf life.

Loss of nutrients: Freezing milk can change its nutritional value. There may be loss of various nutrients such as vitamins and minerals. The molecular structure of fats, proteins and carbohydrates may also change as a result of freezing milk. Frozen milk is most likely to be less healthy as compared to fresh milk.

Risk of contamination:The general perception is that the freezer is safe from harmful microorganisms. However, this is not true because certain types of bacteria have been found in freezers. So, if you are freezing milk to increase its shelf life, do not assume that the milk is safe for consumption. Other harmful pathogens may also be present in the freezer, which can create health problems for you and your family members.

As can be seen from the above outcomes, freezing milk does not give satisfactory results. Moreover, there’s always the risk of contamination by harmful pathogens.
