– An initiative by YouWeCan Cancer Foundation
The YouWeCan Cancer Foundation- a non-profit organisation established by cricketer and cancer survivor Yuvraj Singh, has recently launched a cancer treatment fund under which they provide financial support for the treatment of children from underprivileged backgrounds, who are suffering from cancer. They plan to partner with hospitals in different parts of the country to support such cases.
Under this initiative, the foundation has tied up with AIIMS, New Delhi, for the cancer treatment of a 14 year old boy who is suffering from blood cancer. The boy’s parents are daily wage farmworkers from Utter Pradesh and cannot afford the cost of his treatment.
When asked about the initiative, Yuvraj Singh said, “at YouWecan, we envision an India that is empowered to defeat cancer. An important part of that is to support patients from underprivileged backgrounds who cannot afford the cost of treatment. This is why we launched the YouWeCan Cancer Treatment Fund for Paediatric Patients from underprivileged backgrounds.”
This initiative has been largely supported by IHS Markit under their CSR initiative. YouWeCan hopes to partner with other such companies as their CSR partner, to jointly work towards cancer control in India and provide a much needed boost to the sector.
When asked about the role of private organisation in tackling cancer, Dr. D. K. Sharma, Medical Superintendent, AIIMS- New Delhi says “I am glad that altruistic people from society are taking initiatives to help needy patients. We appreciate Yuvraj Singh Foundation for this help which will certainly support many poor patients in future.”
Although there are several government healthcare schemes for needy patients, due to the large number of cases and the high cost of treatment, it is extremely important that NGOs and companies also start working in this space. “Government has wonderful schemes to support poor patients for their treatment, however it is always beneficial to get help from other agencies as we all work for healthcare as a team. This new association with Yuvraj Singh Foundation would be a great support for Paediatric Oncology patients” says B.R. Shekhar- Chief Medical Social Service Officer at AIIMS New Delhi.
