After the Supreme Court asked the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) to assess the possibility of abortion for the 10-year old rape victim, gynecologists working at the institute said that abortion will not be possible. One of the gynecologists said that carrying out an abortion would be similar to delivering a baby, something that the 10-year old rape victim will not be able to bear. As per directions provided by the Supreme Court, the PGIMER has formed an eight-member committee to look into the possibility of abortion for the 10-year old rape victim. Most of the gynecologists are of the opinion that abortion will not be possible.
One of the gynecologists said that it is very rare for 10 to 12 year old children to get pregnant. Even if such a case emerges, the solution is to carry out a C-section operation to deliver the baby. Normal delivery cannot be executed since a 10-year old child will not be able to bear the pain and trauma of natural delivery. The 10-year old rape victim is pregnant with a 30-week fetus, which makes it difficult to carry out an abortion. As per existing laws, the current celling for abortion in India is 20 weeks. However, Supreme Court has made exceptions based on the health of the victim and the baby. In this case, the matter was reported too late, which has eliminated the possibility of abortion.
