JP Singh, an IRS officer and former joint director of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has been arrested by CBI on Tuesday in relation to an alleged corruption case. Along with Singh, the CBI has also arrested his subordinate Sanjay Kumar and two other people, Vimal Agrawal and Chandresh Patel. It is alleged that these people were involved in Surat hawala case and cricket betting racket, which were unearthed in 2015-16. These people are suspected to have collected large sums of money in an illegal manner. It may be recalled that earlier the CBI had arrested three bookies related to the case. These bookies acted as middleman for Singh and collected bribe on his behalf.
The Intelligence Bureau (IB) has also been investigating the case and had presented its report in a special court in Ahmedabad. The report had stated that Singh took bribes for not arresting certain people involved in the racket. Mumbai-based bookies whose names have come up in the case include Bimal Agrawal and Sonu Jalan. The duo used to collect large sums of money from punters and bookies involved in IPL betting. Further investigations are on to collect required evidence to prepare a foolproof charge sheet.
