Karti Chidambaram, son of former Union Minister P Chidambaram, has been issued summons by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in a corruption case. Karti has been asked to be present at CBI headquarters on July 21, where he is likely to be questioned by CBI officials. It may be recalled that this is the second time Karti is being summoned by CBI. Earlier, he was summoned to appear before CBI on May 18, but at that time, he had asked for more time. Karti has consistently denied allegations against him and has maintained that the cases against him are politically motivated.
Investigations have revealed that kickbacks worth Rs 3.5 crore were given to Karti Chidambaram, as he had facilitated the misuse of foreign investment laws by a private company named INX Media. It has been found that INX Media had approval for foreign investment worth only Rs 4.62 crore, but it had amassed Rs 305 crore in gross violation of foreign investment laws. At that time, INX Media was being managed by Peter Mukherjea and his wife Indrani Mukherjea, who are currently in jail for their alleged involvement in the murder of Indrani’s own daughter Sheena Bora. CBI has alleged that Karti used to utilize his father’s influence in the finance ministry to get approvals for the investments.
