Universities in Tamilnadu got some respite finally. The prestigious Madras University finally got it’s Vice Chancellor and so as Madurai Kamaraj University. However Anna University which is one of the most prestigious one in India with more than 500 engineering colleges affiliated to it is still with no head. The University was in news recently because it conducted the convocation function where the degrees were handed over for the first time in it’s history without the sign and seal of the Vice-Chancellor which prompted students to raise this issue saying that in the future, if there is a problem with regards to this, it is the University which should take up the full onus to settle it amicably.
Education Minister of K.P.Anbalagan spoke to the reporters and informed that a committee has been formed which would finalise the appointment of Vice Chancellor within 4 months, after 3 people who were recommended for the post were rejected by the Governor citing that they did not have the prescribed reach to lead the famed University whose position is vacant since mid of 2016 with the retirement of then VC N Rajaram.
Governor Vidyasagar Rao has appointed Professor P Duraisamy, a retired econometrics professor as Vice Chancellor and Professor PP Chelladurai who worked earlier as he Registrar of Madurai Kamaraj University as it’s Vice Chancellor. The appointment of PP Chelladurai comes as a shocker since he has a criminal case pending on him.
