The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed its chargesheet against United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) leaders Paresh Baruah and its chairman Mukul Hazarika. These people have been charged with waging war against the Indian State. The chargesheet was filed in a special NIA court in Guwahati. The case relates to the 2013 terror attack, in which the people named include arrested ULFA operative Gagan Hazarika and accused Baruah and Mukul Hazarika. It may be recalled that both Baruah and Hazarika are absconding. Baruah is said to be in Myanmar whereas Hazarika is in the United Kingdom. The government is making efforts to extradite them.
The NIA said that it filed the chargesheet since it has collected all the necessary evidence against the ULFA leaders. The various charges that Baruah faces include sections 17, 18, 18A, 18B & 20 of UA (P) Act, 1967 and sections 121A, 124A, 120B and 385 of IPC. In case of Hazarika, the charges are under sections 18, 18A, 18B and 20 of UA (P) Act, 1967 and under sections 121A, 124A of IPC.
