Former Union minister and Congress leader P Chidambaram created a controversy today when he said that people in Kashmir want autonomy when they say they want ‘Azaadi’. However, this statement is far from truth since terrorists in Kashmir are actually planning to convert the area into an Islamic country and they are getting plenty of support from local people. Chidambaram made the statement while speaking during a rally in Gujarat. Political pundits said that Chidambaram made the statement as part of the politics of appeasement, wherein it could get votes from a particular community. Chidambaram also said that the center should give autonomy to Jammu & Kashmir. Chidambaram’s statements have come under sharp criticism on social media and the BJP has also slammed the statement. The statement is contrary to what most people in the country think about the subject of Jammu and Kashmir.
Reacting to the controversial statement of Chidambaram, Union Minister Piyush Goyal said in a tweet, “Now Congress wants Azadi for Kashmir? Time for Azadi from Congress”. Chidambaram had earlier also talked about giving autonomy to Jammu & Kashmir and it indicates towards a new trend where the Congress party may be eying the vote bank of a particular community. During his speech in Rajkot in Gujarat, Chidambaram took the opportunity to target the BJP government over demonetization and the economic downturn. Chidambaram also talked about the recent allegations against congress leader Ahmed Patel and termed it as outrageous.
