Protestors clashed with security personnel in Tral, the hometown of militant commander Burhan Wani, on his first death anniversary. Militant leader Burhan Wani was killed last year on July 8 by security forces. Ahead of his death anniversary, separatists leaders including the Hurriyat Conference factions led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and the JKLF led by Yasin Malik, had asked people to come out of their homes and march to Tral to pay tribute to the militant leader. However, security forces have closed all roads leading to Tral and thousands of motorbikes have also been seized to prevent further unrest in the area.
Some of the clashes broke out when security forces stopped protestors from travelling to Tral. As the protestors started throwing stones, the police had to use tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. A huge number of police personnel were also deployed outside the house of Burhan Wani. Curfew was imposed in Tral to prevent unrest and violence. Curfew has also been imposed in Shopian town of South Kashmir and Trehgam in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
