Congress has lost a lot of ground in recent times, and it was rattled once again after several of its MLAs met Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Not wanting to take any chances, Congress President Sonia Gandhi today called a meeting with the top Congress leaders in Bihar. The primary agenda of the meeting was to keep its flock together in Bihar and prevent them from leaving Congress and joining the ruling government. Already, many Congress legislators who met or called Nitish Kumar are getting increased attention from him. Nitish even visited the constituency of a Congress legislator where floods have caused major damage. Congress currently has 27 legislators in the 243-seat Bihar assembly.
The Congress unit in Bihar is led by Ashok Choudhary, who was present during today’s meeting with Sonia Gandhi. After the meeting, Choudhary appeared confident that there is no risk of its MLAs ditching the party. However, he pointed out that the Congress MLAs in Bihar are not very happy about working with Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and its chief Lalu Prasad Yadav. The MLAs feel that the corruption cases against Lalu and his family members may impact elections results and it’s not good for Congress to hobnob with Lalu. This is why many of them are considering alternative options, Choudhary said.
