A popular saying is that corruption is like water and it can percolate even the strongest of structures. This appears to be true and one more example has just come to the light. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a GST Council Superintendent on corruption charges. Monish Malhotra was working as a Superintendent in the newly formed GST Council. Earlier, Malhotra used to work in the Central Excise Department. He has been charged with accepting bribe from a businessman. The bribe was given to Malhotra on monthly/quarterly basis and in return, Malhotra used to extend illegal favors to the businessman. Malhotra has been charged with criminal conspiracy and demanding illegal gratification. The charges have been filed against him under the Indian Penal Code and Prevention of Corruption Act.
Another person named Manas Patra has also been charged by the CBI in the case. Patra is an independent tax consultant and it is alleged that he worked as a middleman for Malhotra. CBI is now working on further clues, as it has come to its notice that more officials may be involved in the corruption case. As per information available, Patra was closely connected to several other excise officials, which raises the suspicion that more officials may be involved in similar corruption cases.
