A sessions court in Mumbai today acquitted Bollywood singer Ankit Tiwari in a rape case. The case was filed by a woman, who is alleged to be the former girlfriend of Tiwari. The court acquitted Tiwari, since the complainant turned hostile and was not able to support the version provided by the prosecution during the trial proceedings. The decision was announced by additional sessions judge SKS Razvi. The court has also acquitted Tiwari’s brother Ankur who was accused of issuing threats to the complainant. The case dates back to May 2014, when the complaint was filed. Based on the complaint, the Versova police had arrested Tiwari. However, he had later secured bail.
The complainant had alleged that Tiwari had raped her on several occasions on the pretext of marrying her. She said that these incidents occurred between October 2012 and December 2013. She also said that Tiwari did not keep his promise of marrying her. Tiwari’s lawyer said that the case was dismissed since the prosecution was not able to prove the case. The complainant was declared a hostile witness since she was not able to support the prosecution case during her testimony in the court.
