In a relief to former Gujarat cop DG Vanzara, a special court in Mumbai has acquitted him in the alleged Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter case. The court had to take the decision to discharge Vanzara, as it could not find any concrete evidence against him. Along with Vanzara, the court has also acquitted former Rajasthan police officer MN Dinesh. Dinesh has also been acquitted due to lack of sufficient evidence. With Vanzara’s acquittal, 15 out of the original 38 people accused have been discharged so far. The case has been going on for the last 12 years. In 2005, Sohrabuddin Sheikh was found murdered near Gandhinagar in Gujarat. His wife Kauser Bi was also found murdered along with Sheikh.
Sohrabuddin Sheikh was a petty criminal and it was alleged that he was killed in a fake encounter. It was alleged that both Sheikh and his wife were abducted by the Gujarat anti-terror squad and were killed in a fake encounter. Sheikh was accused of plotting the assassination of Narendra Modi, who was the Chief Minister of Gujarat at that time. A man named Tulsiram Prajapati was the lone witness in the alleged fake encounter, but he too was killed a year later. Mr. Vanzara, who has now been acquitted by the court, has expressed his intentions to contest in the forthcoming assembly elections in Gujarat.
