Taking action against the possible culprits in the Byculla jail murder case, the Mumbai Crime Branch today arrested one jail staff and detained five more. It may be recalled that jail inmate Manjula Shetye was killed inside the Byculla jail on June 23. Sources said that the Crime Branch will also probe the riots that took place after the murder of Manjula Shetye. It has been alleged that Shetye had an argument with jail staff, post which, she was assaulted and murdered. It has also been alleged that Shetye was sexually assaulted.
An FIR has also been filed against the inmates of Byculla jail for their involvement in the rioting. The FIR has been filed by the Nagpada police and all 291 inmates have been named in the FIR. The charges of criminal conspiracy have been filed against three people including Indrani Mukerjea, who is in the jail since 2015. Mukerjea is in jail for her involvement in the murder of her own daughter Sheena Bora. Mukerjea has also filed a complaint saying that she was assaulted by jail guards and threatened.
