Curfew in the coastal town of Bhadrak in Odisha has been extended till 8 AM on Sunday. It may be recalled that violence had erupted in the town after some people posted objectionable content on a Facebook page. The page belongs to a RSS-linked Viswa Hindu Parishad (VHP) activist and the disparaging comments were posted on the occasion of Ram Navami. The comments sparked the violence, as VHP and Bajrang Dal activists came out to protest and demanded swift action against the perpetrators. During the protest, many shops were ransacked and set on fire.
Police officials said that 35 persons have been arrested since the last two days of riots and those arrested include both Hindus and Muslims. Odisha director general of police KB Singh said today that the situation has improved now and is expected to get better by tomorrow. He said that there was no major case of violence on Saturday, except a few cases of looting and ransacking. He requested people to not react to rumors or any objectionable or fake messages posted on social media.
