Dalits given soap and asked to clean up before Yogi Adityanath’s visit

In a deplorable incident, it has been alleged that local authorities in Kushinagar gave soap and shampoo to Dalits and asked them to clean up before attending a function organized for Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The incident is said to have occurred in Kushinagar, where Adityanath was to visit for the inauguration of an immunization programme for encephalitis. The soaps and shampoo were distributed to members of the Mushahar community, who are listed as a Schedule Caste in Uttar Pradesh. There are many videos of the incident floating on the internet, wherein the Dalits are showing the soaps and shampoo they had allegedly received from local authorities. However, there has been no response from the district administration in this regard.

The incident and the video have been strongly condemned by many people and political leaders. Some demanded an apology from CM Yogi Adityanath whereas one politician said that the concerned officials should be booked under the SC-ST act. Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Yadav also condemned the treatment given to Dalits and posted a tweet that read, “Such is the state-of-affairs when a yogi is a CM. The next time you visit the poor, try to understand their hardship”.
